What you’ll actually do:

– Dig through drawings, specs, and a never-ending pile of RFQs.
– Crunch numbers for material quantities (yes, you’ll live in Excel).
– Chase down suppliers to get the best prices on materials and subcontract work—think of it like haggling, but with more email chains.
– Lend a hand prepping technical proposals (teamwork makes the dream work, right?).
– Keep estimation records and databases updated so nobody’s flying blind.

What they want from you:

– Degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering or something close enough that it counts.
– At least two years of estimating stuff in Oil & Gas (so, you won’t be completely lost).
– Some idea of how steel fabrication and estimation works—not just the ability to spell it.
– Decent with MS Excel; bonus points if you’ve wrangled AutoCAD and can read technical drawings without crying.
– You play nice with others and can string a sentence together without sounding like a robot.
